A resident population of blacktip reef sharks uses North Reef as a resting and foraging ground year-round, with numbers peaking to 15 or more individuals in the calm-season months of May through September. They occupy the shallow coral flat at 3 to 8 metres, frequently circling divers at close range. Their presence indicates a healthy trophic cascade, with abundant reef fish prey sustaining this apex predator community.
