North Reef
Pigeon Island · Sri Lanka
The most celebrated dive site within Pigeon Island National Park, North Reef is a broad, gently sloping coral plateau that drops to a rubble field at around 18 metres. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows in groups of four to twelve, habituated enough to allow close approach, making this one of Asia's most reliable shark encounters. The reef itself supports dense table and branching Acropora corals interspersed with massive Porites heads, providing habitat for enormous schools of fusiliers and the hawksbill turtles that graze on sponges along the deeper terraces.
