Giant trevally patrol the blue water at the edge of Rock Garden's boulder field in pairs and small schools, using the current deflected by the boulders to position themselves for ambushes on reef fish. They are among the most powerful predators on Sri Lankan reefs, capable of bursts of speed that allow them to run down open-water prey. Their presence at Rock Garden is year-round but most dramatic during the May to September calm season when pelagic productivity increases.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
