Grey reef sharks are abundant at Ant Atoll in numbers rarely encountered at more accessible Micronesian sites, with groups of 20 or more individuals regularly observed on the outer reef slope. The absence of fishing pressure within the atoll has allowed the population to recover to near-pristine density, providing a benchmark for what healthy shark populations look like in this part of the Pacific. Divers drifting along the outer wall in moderate current will typically encounter multiple sequential groups, each occupying a slightly different depth band along the reef.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
