Grey reef sharks patrol the walls and upper slopes of Kehpara in small groups, following the contour of the reef as they hunt fish disturbed from the coral heads by the surge. They are more active at Kehpara than at most Pohnpei lagoon sites, reflecting the stronger currents and richer prey base of this exposed offshore location. Divers descending the wall often find themselves eye-level with a cruising grey reef shark before the shark turns unhurriedly and continues its patrol without breaking rhythm.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
