Giant Clam

Tridacna gigas

Sighting evidence at Mwahnd Passage, Pohnpei

The coral gardens inside Mwahnd Passage contain one of Pohnpei's healthiest populations of giant clams, with multiple large individuals exceeding 80 centimetres in shell length settled among the coral heads at 5 to 12 meters. These filter-feeding bivalves live for over a century and their presence in large numbers indicates a site that has been free from collection pressure for several generations. The vivid blue, green, and purple mantle colours of these animals make them among the most visually striking subjects for wide-angle photography on the passage dives.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
