Great barracuda hang in the mid-water column above Palikir Pass, using the channel as a hunting corridor where current accelerates prey species into exposed positions in the water column. Solitary individuals are typical, though small groups of 5 to 10 occasionally congregate at the seaward mouth of the pass during periods of high tidal flow. Their elongated silver forms are visible from considerable distance in the pass's clear water, hovering nearly motionless as they wait for an opportunity to strike.

Barracuda is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
