Humphead parrotfish use Palikir Pass as a transit route between the outer reef and the lagoon during spawning aggregation periods, moving through in loose schools during certain lunar phases in the dry season. Their transit dives through the pass are among the most dramatic fish-watching experiences in Pohnpei, with groups of 20 or more large individuals cruising purposefully through the channel while sharks and jacks follow in attendance. These aggregation movements are tied to specific moon phases and a knowledgeable local guide is essential for timing a pass dive to coincide with them.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
