Rainbow wrasse dart in tight groups above the submerged walls of Baiae, taking advantage of the elevated water temperature produced by hydrothermal venting to remain active even in winter months when equivalent surface-water sites see reduced fish activity. Their feeding behaviour — picking ectoparasites from larger fish — creates cleaning station dynamics around prominent architectural features. The juveniles are a distinctly different colour from adults, causing frequent misidentifications by visiting divers.

Mediterranean Rainbow Wrasse is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
