Rainbow wrasse are sequential hermaphrodites: every individual begins life as a female, with the largest and most dominant females capable of transitioning permanently to male, developing the species' characteristic orange lateral stripe. They are cleaners during juvenile stages, picking parasites from larger fish, and shift to a predatory diet of small crustaceans and molluscs in adulthood.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
