Quilalea Private Island Reef

Quirimbas Archipelago · Mozambique

Quilalea is a tiny private island at the southern end of the Quirimbas Archipelago, surrounded by a marine sanctuary that has been under active protection since the island's eco-lodge was established, producing reef recovery that is now visually spectacular. The fringing reef wraps the entire island perimeter and drops to a sandy plain at 25 metres, with exceptionally clear water that regularly exceeds 30 metres visibility in the dry season. Quilalea's coral communities include staghorn thickets so dense they form genuine labyrinths, populated by an improbable density of reef fish rarely encountered outside the most remote Pacific atolls.
