Miles' lionfish are abundant throughout the Quilalea reef, hunting small fish and crustaceans from the protective cover of coral overhangs during the day and moving openly across the reef after dark. The site supports healthy populations of these spectacular venomous predators at all depths from the shallowest reef flat to the base of the wall, and their ornate fan-like fins make them a perpetual draw for underwater photographers. Night dives at Quilalea are particularly productive for close lionfish encounters, as individuals become bolder in darkness and will actively herd prey into corners before striking.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
