Giant morays have colonised many of the Keiten Maru's interior spaces, coiling within rusted machinery cavities and portholes with just their heads visible during the day. At night they leave the wreck entirely to hunt across the adjacent sandy bottom, covering surprising distances in pursuit of sleeping fish. Their presence in high numbers reflects the wreck's exceptional habitat value as a refuge within the otherwise open harbour environment.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
