The thermal ledges and freshwater-eroded cavities at Kallithea create an unusually high density of moray dens, with individuals of different sizes partitioning shelter by crevice diameter. Muraena helena is ectothermic and the slight thermal gradient from the springs appears to concentrate them in the 8 to 15 m band where water temperature is most stable year-round. Cleaner shrimp of the genus Lysmata frequently work the moray dens here, providing classic cleaning-station behaviour observable at close range.

Mediterranean moray is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
