Grey reef sharks patrol the outer wall at Caverne Profondes in search of the reef fish that shelter near the cave exits, using the wall's complexity to stage ambushes on unsuspecting prey. In the clean, unfished waters around Rodrigues they display notably curious and unafraid behaviour, approaching divers closely and inspecting equipment. Their territorial nature means individuals often defend specific sections of wall over periods of weeks or months, making them recognisable to regular diving guides.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
