Reef manta rays use the current-swept pinnacles of the strait as cleaning stations and feeding grounds, barrel-rolling through plankton blooms with their cephalic fins unfurled. The upwelling that characterizes this strait concentrates zooplankton in dense aggregations that mantas exploit on incoming tides. Encounters are most reliable between March and June when surface productivity peaks.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
