Cape Kolumbo
Santorini · Greece
Kolumbo is a submerged active volcanic crater 7 km northeast of Santorini, accessible by boat and descended to 18 to 35 m for sport diving. The crater rim hosts hydrothermal vent fields with hydrogen sulphide chimneys, chemosynthetic bacterial mats, and species found nowhere else in the Aegean. Water stratification creates visible density haloclines at around 20 m. This is one of the most scientifically distinctive dive sites in the entire Mediterranean; the advanced skill rating reflects boat exposure, occasional thermocline disorientation, and limited rescue logistics at the outer site.
