European conger are among the largest bony fish in the Mediterranean, reaching up to 3 m and 110 kg. They are powerful predators of fish and cephalopods, hunting at night from rocky lairs and crater-wall crevices. Conger undertake a single spawning migration to deep water of 3,000 to 4,000 m in the Atlantic before dying, meaning adults caught or seen at dive sites have never reproduced.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
