Great barracuda form stationary hovering groups along the deeper sections of the islet wall at 15 to 25 m, apparently using the current shadow behind the crater rim to ambush prey passing in the flow. They are one of the most photogenic species at this site due to their stillness and the clean blue water backdrop the open Atlantic provides. Juveniles occupy shallower rubble zones while large adults reaching over 1 m cluster on the mid-wall, a size stratification typical of this species.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
