Common octopus are exceptionally abundant in the granite boulder terrain around Capo Testa, which provides ideal denning habitat across the full depth range of the site. They are tactile problem-solvers capable of opening shellfish, using tools, and navigating complex environments — capacities that make them endlessly engaging dive companions. Day dives regularly reveal 5 to 10 individuals active in and around their dens, which are identifiable by the shell middens they accumulate outside the entrance.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
