Mediterranean moray eels are ubiquitous in the granite boulder fields of La Maddalena, exploiting the labyrinthine crevices that the geology provides. Multiple large individuals often share a single boulder complex, maintaining loose social hierarchies and occasionally hunting cooperatively with grouper — a cooperative predation behaviour documented in the wild. They are predominantly nocturnal but are regularly spotted with heads protruding from holes during day dives.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
