Lionfish have colonised the Saint-Louis wreck in numbers, exploiting its complex iron structure to ambush small fish and shrimp in the crevices of corroded metal. Their venomous spines provide near-total protection from predators, enabling a bold, slow-moving hunting style that can be observed closely by divers. The wreck environment concentrates prey items and provides stable resting positions that suit the lionfish's ambush ecology.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
