Giant morays are cooperative predators that sometimes hunt collaboratively with roving grouper, signalling to the grouper where prey fish are hiding so both species benefit from the flush. They control populations of reef fish and cephalopods, and their muscular jaws equipped with both oral and pharyngeal jaws allow them to swallow large prey in a single motion. Canyon overhangs at Embudhoo provide the low-light conditions giant morays prefer during daylight rest.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
