Bigeye trevally form enormous rotating bait-ball formations above exposed thilas, using the current to maintain position with minimal energy expenditure while opportunistically feeding on small fish and invertebrates swept through by the flow. These aggregations serve as anti-predator mechanisms, confusing sharks and larger trevally that attempt to pick off individuals from the school. Their schooling behaviour over thilas creates one of the Maldives' most visually dramatic dive experiences.

Bigeye Trevally is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
