Longfin batfish gather in large, loose schools around the midship superstructure, their tall disc-shaped bodies making them instantly recognisable as they drift in the current. They are highly curious fish that will approach and hover in front of divers, giving the impression of being examined with equal intensity. Their schooling behaviour around the wreck creates some of the most dramatic wide-angle photography opportunities at the Yongala.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
