Humpback whales transit the Bequia channel between March and June during their northward migration from southern hemisphere feeding grounds, with mothers and calves resting in the sheltered waters between St. Vincent and Bequia to nurse before continuing their journey. The presence of calves means encounters must be managed with care; local operators maintain minimum approach distances. In-water encounters when whales are resting and relaxed can produce extraordinary audio experiences as males sing complex breeding songs audible from kilometres away.

Humpback Whale is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
