Whale sharks appear off Bequia's eastern walls between April and May, drawn by plankton blooms triggered by Atlantic upwelling into the channel. Sightings are irregular but become more predictable in years with strong upwelling, and local dive operators have developed an informal network to relay sighting information quickly. These gentle filter feeders reach 6–8 metres in these waters and are typically observed feeding at 5–15 metres depth where plankton concentration is highest.

Whale Shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
