Tobago Cays Marine Park
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines · Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
The Tobago Cays Marine Park encompasses five uninhabited islands surrounded by a horseshoe reef and ranks among the last genuinely pristine reef ecosystems in the entire Caribbean, protected since 1987 and largely free from the overfishing pressure that has degraded reefs throughout the region. Hawksbill and green sea turtles congregate in the central seagrass beds in densities rarely seen elsewhere in the Caribbean — up to 20 individuals can be observed in a single dive — while the outer horseshoe reef drops to 30 metres and teems with large Nassau grouper, black grouper, and sweeping schools of horse-eye jacks. Coral cover on the inner reef remains high by regional standards, with extensive stands of pillar coral, massive brain corals, and sea fans creating complex three-dimensional habitat.
