Sea Fan (Gorgonian)

Subergorgia mollis

Sighting evidence at Labas Island, Tioman Island

The massive gorgonian sea fans at Labas are among the largest in Malaysian waters, some colonies having grown for several decades to reach heights exceeding two metres. They orient themselves perpendicular to prevailing currents to maximise zooplankton capture, providing critical structural habitat for pygmy seahorses, basket stars, and hawkfish. Their health serves as a sensitive indicator of water quality and the effectiveness of Tioman's marine protected area.
