Sea Fan (Gorgonian)

Acabaria rubra

Sighting evidence at Coral Gardens, False Bay

Dense stands of red sea fans dominate the deeper sections of Coral Gardens, their branching structures oriented perpendicular to the prevailing current to maximise particle capture from the plankton-rich water. These cold-water gorgonians grow extremely slowly — some of the larger colonies at Coral Gardens are estimated to be over a century old — and their presence indicates an exceptionally stable, undisturbed reef environment. The fans host numerous commensals including pygmy seahorses, brittle stars, and basket stars that shelter in their branches.

Sea Fan (Gorgonian) is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
