Great amberjack circle the Bookends pinnacles in loose pods, using the structure as a reference point for orientating in open water while hunting the dense baitfish aggregations. They are fast, powerful hunters capable of bursts of speed exceeding 70 kilometres per hour and can exceed 70 kilograms in weight. Their inquisitive, bold behaviour around divers makes them one of the most engaging large pelagics at the site.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
