Atlantic bluefin tuna

Thunnus thynnus

Sighting evidence at La Vedova Reef, Tremiti Islands

The Adriatic was historically a major bluefin tuna spawning ground, and while populations crashed through the 20th century, Atlantic-wide quota management since 2010 has produced a measurable recovery. Bluefin now occasionally pass the Tremiti group in summer on their way to and from Adriatic spawning areas — fast, deep, blue-water animals that appear suddenly at the pinnacle edge and are gone in seconds. A sighting here is never guaranteed but is no longer rare.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
