La Vedova Reef
Tremiti Islands · Italy
La Vedova — the widow — is a submerged reef pinnacle rising from 35 metres to within 12 metres of the surface between San Domino and the smaller islands, and it is the most talked-about big-fish dive in the Tremiti group. Enormous shoals of large sea breams encircle the pinnacle while grouper patrol the base, and the top is coated in living gorgonians with commensal shrimps visible on every branch. In late summer, sunfish and occasional bluefin tuna pass through the blue just beyond the pinnacle's edge.
