The Adriatic hosts one of the Mediterranean's important loggerhead sea turtle populations, with the Tremiti islands lying along a known foraging corridor. Caretta caretta feeds primarily on invertebrates — jellyfish, crabs, and molluscs — and individuals are seen year-round but peak in frequency in summer. The marine reserve's ban on gillnets and trawling around the islands has substantially reduced the bycatch mortality that threatens Adriatic loggerheads elsewhere.

No confirmed records on file at this site

Loggerhead sea turtle is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
