Yellowfin Goatfish

Mulloidichthys martinicus

Sighting evidence at Chagville Point, Trinidad

Dense schools of yellowfin goatfish work the rubble margins below the reef slope, using chemosensory barbels to detect buried worms and crustaceans. They serve as a key prey species for the eagle rays and nurse sharks that make this site famous, and their abundance indicates a productive, nutrient-rich benthic environment. Schools of 200 or more individuals are common in the 10 to 20 meter range.
