Broadclub cuttlefish patrol the wreck site hunting the dense shrimp and small fish populations sheltering in the aircraft's structure, their skin producing rapid hypnotic rippling patterns of light and dark that seem to mesmerize prey before the strike. Their intelligence — demonstrated through learning, play, and sophisticated communication via 33 different documented chromatic skin patterns — makes them among the most cognitively advanced invertebrates in the ocean.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
