Green turtles are abundant inside the Funafuti Conservation Area, grazing on seagrass beds in the lagoon and resting on the outer reef slope. As ecosystem engineers, they maintain the health of seagrass meadows through intensive grazing that keeps blades short and promotes faster regrowth — without regular grazing, seagrass becomes senescent and less productive as a nursery habitat for juvenile fish and invertebrates.

Green Sea Turtle is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
