Green turtles return to their birth beach to nest, sometimes crossing thousands of kilometres of open ocean. Funafuti's islets are among the last intact nesting beaches in the central Pacific. Rising sea levels are actively eroding nesting habitat here — the beach is visibly narrower than it was a decade ago.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
