Blue tangs at Coki Beach form mixed-species grazing schools with ocean surgeonfish and doctorfish, cropping algae from reef surfaces in sweeping passes that keep carbonate substrate available for coral recruitment. The scalpel-like spine at the tail base is erected as a defensive weapon when the fish is handled or cornered, a reminder that even benign-looking reef fish carry effective deterrents. Their relentless grazing makes them functionally indispensable for reef resilience across the Caribbean.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
