Salt River Canyon
US Virgin Islands · United States Virgin Islands
Salt River Bay on St. Croix cuts through a submerged canyon system where two distinct walls — the East Wall and West Wall — plunge from 15 metres to beyond 60 metres, draped in black coral forests and rope sponges the diameter of drainpipes. Nurse sharks rest under ledge overhangs at mid-depth while colonies of black durgeon triggerfish patrol open water above the drop-off. Salt River is also historically significant as the only documented site where Columbus's crew landed on present-day US soil in 1493, giving the dive a rare blend of ecological drama and historical resonance.
