Canary damselfish

Chromis limbata

Sighting evidence at Wreck of the Secchia, Ustica Island

The canary damselfish is a small, vivid yellow-orange species that hovers in dense clouds above reef structures and wreck superstructures throughout the warmer months. At the Secchia, hundreds of individuals form a perpetual yellow haze above the highest points of the wreck, feeding on zooplankton carried in the current. They are intensely territorial during the breeding season (spring to summer), when males clear patches of hull surface, fan eggs obsessively, and aggressively drive away fish many times their own size.

Canary damselfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
