Red scorpionfish occupy every surface of the Secchia's hull — bollards, railings, anchor chain links — blending with the encrusting growth so completely that discovering one requires methodical scanning. Their ambush hunting strategy is ideally suited to wreck environments, where prey fish move predictably through corridors and openings. The Secchia's depth (peak wreck body around 38 m) means water temperature remains cooler than the shallows, favouring larger-bodied specimens that grow slowly in the colder, deeper zone.

Scorpionfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
