The reserve status around Skomer sustains healthy spiny lobster populations sheltering beneath boulders and kelp holdfasts, their antennae sweeping the current for food. Skomer holds one of the best remaining Welsh populations of this once-common species, which has been commercially depleted elsewhere in the Bristol Channel. Night dives reveal them foraging actively across open rock, their behaviour far more expansive than during daylight hours.

Spiny Lobster is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
