Blue Shark

Prionace glauca

Sighting evidence at The Smalls Reef, Wales (Pembrokeshire)

Blue sharks appear at The Smalls from June through September, riding warm North Atlantic Drift intrusions inshore to exploit the productive frontal zone around the reef. They are the most pelagic and wide-ranging of Atlantic sharks and encounters here are on free-swimming individuals — not baited — making them among the most naturalistic shark dives in British waters. Their extraordinary blue colouration and large, curious eyes make them perhaps the most beautiful sharks a diver can encounter in European seas.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
