Coral grouper are vivid red-orange fish that sit motionless on coral heads around the cave entrance, blending with the encrusting red sponges in the lower-light conditions of the cave surroundings. These ambush predators rely on camouflage and patience rather than pursuit speed, launching explosive strikes at passing damselfish and wrasse. As moderate apex predators on the shallow reef, their presence in healthy numbers is an indicator of good reef condition and limited fishing pressure.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
