Dominica Sperm Whale Coast

The leeward coast of Dominica is home to the only known year-round resident sperm whale population in the eastern Caribbean, a social unit of roughly 15 to 25 females and calves that uses the deep submarine canyon running close to shore as a feeding ground. Divers descend the Scott's Head dropoff and the volcanic Champagne Reef vent field while whale researchers track clicks on hydrophones overhead, and on permitted snorkel encounters the whales approach within metres of the surface.
