Ha'apai Islands
Tonga · Pacific
Ha'apai is Tonga's most remote island group — a low-lying constellation of coral atolls and limestone islands with almost no dive tourism. From July through October, humpback whale mothers and calves rest in the calm lagoons en route from Antarctic feeding grounds, and in-water encounters are genuinely possible. Spinner dolphins are resident year-round. The reefs saw very few anchor chains and almost no sunscreen for decades, which shows: hard coral cover is among the highest in the South Pacific, visibility routinely exceeds 40 metres, and large pelagics including reef sharks and giant trevally are unafraid. Diving here requires liveaboard access or a stay on Lifuka Island and a level of self-sufficiency that keeps the crowds away permanently.
