Underwater reef at Redang Island
Thriving

Redang Island

Malaysia · Southeast Asia

Pulau Redang anchors the Terengganu Marine Park, a cluster of nine islands where fishing has been banned since 1994, producing some of the most pristine coral gardens in the South China Sea. Whale sharks drift through on seasonal passage from March to August, leopard sharks rest on sandy rubble patches year-round, and dense schools of fusiliers, snappers, and glassfish fill the water column above reefs studded with massive Porites heads and sea fans two metres across.
