Yaeyama Manta Coast

Japan · Ryukyu Islands

The north coast of Ishigaki Island hosts the largest resident reef manta aggregation in Japan, with a photo-identified population of more than 300 individuals returning to predictable cleaning stations on a daily tidal cycle. The Manta Scramble ridge and adjacent sites along this coastline are the most reliable place in East Asia to observe reef mantas at close range, with encounters averaging 20 to 40 individuals on peak days. Beyond mantas, the same tidal channels that concentrate zooplankton also attract whale sharks on seasonal passage, while the sheltered inner bays offer pristine hard coral gardens and macro habitats in turquoise water.
