Sazan Island Wrecks
Albania · Albania
Sazan Island served as a heavily fortified Soviet and Albanian military base from the 1940s until the 1990s, and its surrounding waters now hold an extraordinary collection of Cold War submarine support vessels, patrol boats, and naval craft — some of the most historically unique wreck diving available anywhere in Europe. The wrecks sit at depths between 15 and 45 metres in generally excellent visibility, and because the island was only opened to civilians after 2014, most sites are in pristine condition with original artefacts, instruments, and even personal effects still in place. Marine growth has rapidly colonised the hulls, with cup corals, sponges, and moray eels already making established homes inside the former military structures.
